Notes from a Tuesday morning supply line failure

Different job, different category. Basement floor drain backing up with grey brown water, sewage smell strong at the door. This is category 3 water by S500 definition, and the first hour rules change completely. No walking through it. No fans pointed at it (you will aerosolize bacteria into the rest of your home). No salvaging the cardboard, the particle board, the carpet pad, or anything porous it touched.
This homeowner called us first, which was the right move. He did not try to clean it. He closed the basement door, kept the kids and the dog upstairs, and texted photos. That gave dispatch enough information to roll the right truck (containment supplies, antimicrobials, PPE) instead of a standard water truck. Saved roughly 90 minutes on the back end.
One thing he asked on site that I get on almost every category 3 call: can the finished drywall be saved if it only got wet on the bottom four inches? The honest answer is no. - Cut power to affected circuits at the panel if water is near outlets or fixtures
- Photograph everything before you move anything
- Identify the water category (clean supply, appliance discharge, or sewage/exterior)
- Stay out of sewage water entirely; close the door to the affected area
- Lift small valuables, electronics, and paper off the floor
- Slide foil or plastic under furniture legs sitting on wet wood
- Open windows only if outdoor humidity is lower than indoor
- Do not run the HVAC if water touched ductwork or vents
- Call your restoration company before your insurance company
- Write down the time the loss started; adjusters will ask
- Open a claim number that same day, even if it is after hours
Notes on the things people forget
The first hour mistakes I see most often are not dramatic. They are small and expensive.
Forgetting to photograph before moving anything. Insurance adjusters want to see the scene as it was found. I have watched claims get reduced because the homeowner cleaned up too thoroughly before documentation. Phone camera, every room, every angle, every wet object, before you touch anything.
Moving wet furniture onto dry hardwood. The stain from a wet upholstered chair leg onto oak flooring can be permanent within two hours. Slide aluminum foil or plastic plates under the legs, or move the furniture to a tile or concrete area.
Leaving books and paper stacked. Paper wicks moisture upward into ceilings and walls you did not realize were affected. Pull books off lower shelves and stand them fanned open somewhere dry.
Not checking the ceiling below. Water finds the path of least resistance, which is almost always downward through a light fixture or vent. If the loss is upstairs, the room below is also a loss until proven otherwise.
Forgetting to call the insurance carrier's 24 hour line to open a claim number. You do not need to wait until morning. The timestamp on the claim opening matters for coverage disputes later, especially on losses that straddle midnight.

The single best predictor of total project cost is the gap between when the water started and when extraction begins.
